Last week I was not feeling well and went to see a doctor.
As he checked on me I noticed something playing softly on his laptop. A live rally. The president was in town.
He reached to turn it down when he saw that I had noticed. I told him not to bother.
So we sat there, the doctor and his patient, half-listening while he did what doctors do. One thing kept coming through the speakers from one speaker to the next.
We delivered what we promised. Here is why we deserve the next five years.
I left the clinic thinking about that framing. Not about the election. About the five years.
Campaign season is impossible to avoid right now.
Billboards on the roads. Songs from passing vehicles. Posters at every junction. Radio ads. Newspapers. Social media. Everyone making the case for why their side and not the other.
And somewhere in all of that I remembered something.
Five years ago, a week before election day, I published my very first blog post. Two weeks later a group of us started a company together. I was not thinking about personal manifestos at the time. I was just starting things that felt worth starting.
But here we are five years later. Still going. Still figuring it out.
I wrote about the personal manifesto idea back then too, the week the results were announced.
Most of us can plan to the end of the month. Some of us can plan to the end of the year. But five years? That is where most personal plans quietly fall apart. It feels too far. Too abstract. Too many things could change between now and then.
And yet the things that actually matter in a life rarely happen in one year. A business needs time to find its feet. A marriage needs time to become what it is supposed to be. A career shift needs time to take root. A financial position worth having needs time to build. These things can begin in a year. But they become something in five.
What makes the election cycle useful is not the politics. It is the accountability built into the structure. Politicians stand in front of people every five years and answer for what they said they would do. The cycle is fixed. The day of reckoning comes regardless. That discipline is available to us too. Not automatically. Only if we choose it.
Something about campaign season makes five years feel real in a way that ordinary planning never quite manages.
Maybe it is because the whole country is having the same conversation at the same time. Maybe it is just that five years is the right unit of time for anything that actually matters.
I do not know exactly why it works. I just know that in August 2021 something in me decided to begin.
Come the 2031 general election, where do you want to be?
The same season is here again.
